Salmon, Shad and Sturgeon trips
Willamette – For over half the month the Willamette was un-fishable due to high off colored water. When it was in shape good catches of Shad and Salmon were taken. Shad were in the 10 to 15 foot range unless you were up by the falls then just let out a 10 foot diver in any depth. Salmon were on the ledges where water fell from about 12 feet to 20+ feet. Bouncing eggs, shrimp and prawns was very effective.
Columbia – Shad season was fair at best high water all month long challenged everyone. Most fish were in the 12-14 foot range. I have not seen the counts get above 60K a day like in years past. Even though they moved the marker the Oversize fishery was not that affected other than the high water off colored water days. Keepers were much more difficult to find this year as everyone congregated in a small area. All the keepers were caught on chucks of Shad about half the size of the palm of your hand. So far Walleye has been a bust.
Next Up: July will be Steelhead and if allowed some Salmon. Sturgeon will still be an option but we should see the Shad numbers drop significantly.
