Steelhead, Salmon and Sturgeon
Columbia – The whole month was spent on the Columbia targeting Steelhead, Salmon and Sturgeon. The first of the month the Sturgeon were still doing well despite moving the marker to below Multnomah Falls. Fish were migrating up on the flats in the 20-30 foot range and chunks of Shad and Squid caught most of the fish. Salmon fishing was slow due to erratic water temperature changes. The fish caught were big though. All fish were caught on spinners and Kwikfish. Steelhead has been great this year. We have been fishing the Shad rack and due to water temperature we have moved out into about 18-22 feet of water. In the morning with overcast days the cooper blade and Red blade work the best but those days where it has been clear right off the bat red blade spinners are the key. The bit has primarily been from 5am – 10:30am then it gets really hard to catch them.
Next Up: August is all about Astoria and Buoy 10. Should be another great year, first half of the month will be all Chinook then by the 15th the Coho should be in. Don’t miss out this is a one month fishery
