February 2010
Steelhead, Sturgeon and Salmon were on the menu in February
Willamette – Sturgeon fishing was steady on the Willamette a bait change about mid month sand shrimp became the go to bait, followed by anchovies. Did good with Steelhead on the upper Clackamas trolling eggs, shrimp and prawns.
Columbia – Valentines Day was the kick off of Salmon on the Columbia, I have spent my time trolling below the I-5 Bridge and picking up nice fish all on cut plug herring. Go rid of the flashers this year as they were too troublesome with all the tangling since I fish right on the bottom. Early in February when the smelt showed the Rainer area was hot for Sturgeon with keepers size sturgeon being caught just about every day and fast action on the decent size fish as well.
Clackamas – Fished the Clackamas a lot early in month and it slowed as the month wore on. Side drifting took almost all the fish with a few fish caught back-trolling bait. Eggs were the main bait.
Next Up: March is the kick off for Springer season and I expect this year to be red hot if any early indicators continue. Sturgeon is also a great bet in both rivers as water temperature continues to rise. Tributary rivers will be free for those wanting to pursue Steelhead, March is a great month to do so.
NOTE: The boat dock at the airport is closed until late March. Chinook Landing is your best bet and run down to below I-5 to fish for Salmon.
