June Newsletter
June was a very busy month. A majority of the time was spent fishing for
Shad and Oversize Sturgeon; however we did get in a few trips to the Sandy
River and fished for keeper Sturgeon.
June 2008
Sandy River – A few trips on the Sandy with limited success. The water
dropped into shape but the fish were hard to come by. All the holes on the
lower Sandy are filling in with silt. The Pipe hole, Big Bend and Dabney
Park used to run at 13-25 feet are now 8-10 feet. The upper part is much
better that is where we got are only fish for the two trips, we caught the
Steelhead side drifting a sand shrimp and orange corky.
Columbia – The Shad are moving have been tough this year but we are still
getting on average about 5 per hour. Oversize Sturgeon has been great as
usual with an average of 2 fish per trip. The key is to cut the bait down a
bit using only a half Shad. Keeper sturgeons have been hit and miss usually
a bunch of shakers caught before you can get a legal. We used smelt
primarily but had some good days using small chucks of Shad.
I received an Email about the type of lure and color to use when fishing for
Shad so here is my reply. I prefer to use Dick nite spoons but triple
teasers, shad darts and crappie jigs work well as does any small trout
spoons. On cloudy days use chartreuse, red, and yellow colored lures. On
bright days stay with lots of gold, silver or white colored lures. Most use
a dropper with weight, if you do this keep your dropper at about 18-24” I
like to use a jet diver #10 but do use both techniques; it is all a matter
of preference.
Next Up: July will hold shad and sturgeon until about mid month, the
steelhead counts are climbing and I will be targeting them on the Columbia
and its tributaries. I will for steelhead near the Kalama boat ramp on the
Washington side and up by Drano/Wind. The tributary rivers I will be the
Lewis and Cowlitz primarily unless the Clackamas takes off.
Buoy 10 fishery starts August 1, call now for great spots.

6/18/08:
The Steelhead season on the Columbia River opened Monday, June 16 all the
way up to Bonneville Dam. Salmon fishing also opened on the Columbia above Bonneville
Dam. The Shad numbers passing over Bonneville Dam recently hit
65K, so that fishery is now in full swing.
This is a fantastic action packed fishery that's great
for families with kids ages 5 to 12 as well as teenagers. The adults really
enjoy it too. There are days that we have hooked over 30 fish in our boat.
If you are looking to get out and catch some fish I still have great dates
available for all of these fisheries.
May Newsletter
Greetings everyone:
May was a solid month for many northwest anglers. Unfortunately the Willamette
River was closed right at the time when
the Multnomah Channel was producing some nice fish. The Lewis River in
Washington had good days
and long days. Sturgeon fishing has been good for Oversize but tough for
keepers. Shad fishing is slower than normal this time of year but we are catching
fish.
May 2008
Willamette River – Great fishing for Spring Chinook in the channel. Most of
our fish were caught using red prawns and sand shrimp. You needed to keep
the bait right on the bottom in order for it to be effective.
Lewis River – We had some good days when the water temperature was in the
low to mid 50’s, when it was colder than 50 the bite was off. We were also
picking up nice summer steelhead drifting eggs, sand shrimp and prawns. The
Salmon were keying in on sand shrimp and prawns back trolled or hovered
right on the bottom.
Columbia River – The Shad are moving but not nearly the amount in years past. The
most I have seen is 10K for one day, usually this time of year we are at 50K
plus per day. We are still catching a few per hour. Oversize Sturgeon has
been great as usual with an average of 2 fish per trip. Keeper sturgeon has
been tough with the high water, you have to run all over the river looking
for them and fight through all the shakers, we did have better success on
the Willamette for Sturgeon using squid and sand shrimp.
Next Up: We are still waiting to see if June 16th opens the Columbia for
Salmon. Focus still is on Oversize Sturgeon, Summer Steelhead and Shad. Some
good chances still exist for Salmon on the Lewis and Sandy Rivers with the
Wilson a close second.
There are still great spots available for any of these fisheries.
